Iconic Lots From Goldin Auctions February 2021 Sale

Goldin Auctions' February sale was one of the most Michael Jordan dominant auctions seen. Despite featuring some of the greatest Jordan cards to date, the auction also featured some of the most sought after and iconic cards of the niche.

Lot #1: 1986-87 Fleer #57 Michael Jordan Rookie Card – PSA GEM MT 10 -$615,000

1986 fleer michael jordan #57 lot 1

Less than a month ago 2 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie cards sold for almost $740,000 each, and it seems that the overwhelming demand for the card continues its dramatic rise among investors and collectors affluent enough to get their hands on this remarkable card. As such it was no surprise that we would see the 1986 Jordan rookie reemerge for Goldin Auction’s February auction as well.

While this PSA 10 did not manage to shatter the previous auction's record, it still managed to yield $615,000. Still an astronomical increase when compared to 2020 prices.

Lot #2: 2017 Panini National Treasures Holo Silver #161 Patrick Mahomes II Signed Patch Rookie Card (#22/25) - BGS GEM MINT 9.5/BGS 10 - $296,430

A prime example of what a premium rookie card looks like. With edges graded at a 9, centering and corners at 9.5, and a surface at 10, this Patrick Mahomes card was given an overall 9.5 by BGS, with signature grading at a 10. Limited to only 25 card, the rarity of this card (coupled with extreme demand by investors and collectors) rightfully sold for a jaw-dropping $296,430.

Lot #5: 1998-99 Upper Deck "Jordan Jersey Autographs" #MJx-GJ Michael Jordan Signed Game Used Patch Card (#3/23) – BGS GEM MINT 9.5/BGS 10 -$295,200

Yet another remarkable card from the basketball legend Michael Jordan was sold during Goldin’s February sale, and it further cemented the increasing demand (and value) of high quality collectable sports cards. With centering and surface graded at a perfect 10, edges at 9.5, and corners at 9, the final grade for this card was BGS 9.5, with signature graded 10 by Beckett. Prominently featured on the card we have the red patch relic from a jersey worn by Jordan in an official 1992/93-season NBA game, along with an authentic Michel Jordan blue ink signature. Limited to only 23, this might be one of the finest specimens of a Michael Jordan card, well deserving of the $295,200 final selling price.

Lots #6 and #70: 2000 Playoff Contenders #144 Tom Brady Signed Rookie Card - BGS MINT 9/BGS 10 -$107,010

2000 Playoff Contenders #144 Tom Brady Signed Rookie Card lot 6

With 7 Super bowls under his belt, and a future Hall of Famer, it is no surprise that demand for Tom Brady rookies is starting to accelerate. Presented in February’s auction were 2 lots featuring what was probably one of the most famous and sought after Brady rookies ever printed, and they were both in exceptional condition. With centering at a perfect 10 and 9, edges at 8.5 and 9, corners at 9 and 8.5, and surface at 9.5 respectively, the cards received an overall BGS 9 grading, with signature graded 10 by Beckett. Lot #6 went on to yield $107,010, with Lot #70 trailing only slightly behind at $100,869.

Lot #3: 1986/87 Fleer Stickers #8 Michael Jordan Rookie Card – PSA GEM MT 10 -$234,930

With over 13,000 pieces graded by PSA, only 119 have ever been given a PSA 10 grading, making exceptional quality 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan stickers extremely rare and sought after. The seemingly pack-fresh lot had excellent centering, color, and untouched corners, well deserving of the $234,930 final selling price.
